A few words on piecing together panoramas.
![Medellin](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/medellin3.jpg)
Sometimes you get enough of the right pieces for a good picture.
._.
![You can cut it smaller for a solid picture, but half the time that just ruins the shot you were going for.](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/medellin2_fused1.jpg)
Sometimes there are just chunks missing from what you want.
._.
![You can re-work control points over and over, nothing. Tri-pods make things easier, but standing on a boat going at 5 knots will always make these things difficult.](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/sanblas1.jpg)
Sometimes pictures just won't line up no matter how hard you try.
._.
Sometimes things just work out…

Our hotel in San Juan La Laguna, Guatemala
._.
![It has been called "the most beautiful lake in the world" by many. I thought it was overhyped - cool, but not the best.](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/atitlan3.jpg)
A wider view of the lake - Lake Atitlan, that is; Guatemala.
._.
![Nearly every big city in Latin America has a religious center of some sort on the top of a nearby hill, usually an extraordinarily large sculpture of Jesus.](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/tegucigalpa.jpg)

![Waves are difficult to match up when piecing panoramas together. Look close at the middle and you can see where they didn't quite fit together.](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/sanjuan1bad.jpg)
The bay at San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua
._.
![A great and interesting coastline. I wouldn't get in the water, though.](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/panamacity1.jpg)
Panama City, from the old town, with weather moving in.
._.
![The old town is a mix of crumbling buildings, building shells, buildings under construction, and big, new buildings. Give it a few years and it will probably all be redone.](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/panamacity2.jpg)
Old town coastline, Panama City
._.
![For as slow as the process is, and as crowded as the place can be with tourists, watching the canal (well, the locks really) in action is fascinating.](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/panamacanal1.jpg)
Miraflores Locks, The Panama Canal
._.
![The Miraflores Locks passes two boats about every half hour at the cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars per boat (well, for passage through the whole canal)](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/panamacanal2.jpg)
They move! Boats in the Panama Canal
._.
![Taking pictures for a panorama from a moving boat isn't completely impossible.](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/sanblas2.jpg)
The San Blas Islands near Porvenir
._.
![This sunset looks pretty good, but a sunset at open sea, i.e. when there is no land in sight, is surprisingly dull and boring with nothing to put it into perspective.](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/sanblassunset.jpg)
The San Blas Islands (Kuna Yala), Panama
._.
![Not all island panoramas have to be from far away. Not every island has the beautiful, light blue water like this one did, either. Of course, that light blue water meant everything had died and the sand, underwater, was clear of all life - so not being everywhere is a good thing.](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/sanblasbeaut.jpg)
The San Blas Islands (The Kuna Yala), Panama
._.
![This shot goes just about 360 degrees, though moving around the mast meant that I changed angles and, when putting the shot together, it fit better overlapping over the mast so poof, gone.](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/cartagenabysea.jpg)
Cartagena, Colombia from the sea (obviously)
._.
![Medellin is big, and full of places to get good, big shots from. This was from an outlet mall.](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/medellin7.jpg)
Medellin, Colombia - from within the town
._.
![There are several cable car lines in Medellin that lead to some great views (not too mention the great views in the cars on the way)](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/medellin1.jpg)
Medellin from the mountains to the south, at a station.

![It was a good game. There's a blog about it here somewhere (or there soon will be)](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/medellin6.jpg)
Estadio Anastasio Giradot - Medellin - Atletico Nacional vs. Equidad
._.
![Taken from the Plaza de Bolivar, one of the more interesting plazas in Colombia. There was a giant pillar with a large 1/2 man (bottom half), 1/2 eagle, on one side. On the other there were two giant, stick-figurish stone people. And on one corner, hanging from a cable, was a tye-dyed man on horseback suspended over an intersection.](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/manizalescathedralbetter.jpg)
Manizales, Colombia - Catedral Basilica Nuestra Señora del Rosario
._.
![Manizales has a great feel to it, and some great mountains to explore (that are foggy in the distance in the picture), but, otherwise, not a lot of options for activities. The new hostel was fantastic, though, and certainly had the best view of any place to stay.](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/manizalesbyday.jpg)
Manizales, Colombia - from the roof of Base Camp Hostel
._.
![The rooftop, the hostel's bar, was a great place to hang out, and the view was even better at night. Only three things could really ruin a visit to the roof: the fog, the rain, and the police from the big office building in the bottom center that worried we were Venezuelans taking pictures of them.](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/manizales1.jpg)
Manizales, Colombia - nighttime from Base Camp
._.
![The park in the foreground was once a slum, but the rebels launched one too many projectile attacks from there so BAM it's a park now](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/bogota111.jpg)
Bogota, Colombia - a stop on the bike tour
._.
![Bogota has many, many cities just a short bus ride outside of town. Nemocon is home to one of two big salt mines in the area - the one here in town (actually under where we were standing) has been in use for hundreds of years, and they have also discovered a trove of fossils nearby as well.](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/nemocon.jpg)
Nemocon, Colombia
._.
![Just one of many, many caverns (and other cool shots) in the Nemocon salt mine. All that white stuff - yeah, salt. There's plenty to see here as you range to about 80 meters down, and chatting with the guide (who spoke very little english) was a pleasure. In about two years another wing of the mine opens, going to a huge lagoon that is about 200 meters down. That said, I would love to open a hostel in Nemocon in about 2 years, anybody care to sponsor that idea?](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/nemoconmina.jpg)
La mina de Nemocon - Colombia
._.
![Remind you of a Starbucks? Well, basically it is. Juan Valdez Coffee shops hold that status in Colombia, though (no Starbucks to be seen), pitching not only coffee but all kinds of shirts, cups, etc. donning the image of the Colombian coffee picker and his donkey that you may remember from the commercials.](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/valdez1.jpg)
Not everything has to be a huge scene - Juan Valdez, Bogota
._.
![Like I said before, every town has a big Jesus in the hills. Bogota's is just beyond visibility on the left in this picture, though. We went to the church instead: it's a few hundred years older, and they have both cable car and funicular access. Jesus is a hike.](http://thosecrazycanfields.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/bogota5.jpg)
Bogota, Colombia - from on high at Iglesia de Monserrate
That’s about it for this panorama-rama, unless I ever manage to piece together my 28 picture Manizales set into a successful panorama.
I’d like to thank all the cool places for the good views. I’d like to half-thank Nikon for the (mostly) working camera, though when I asked them were I could get a copy of the panorama program that came with the camera if I didn’t have the disc with me they said I was out of luck.
With that in mind I’d like to thank and recommend Hug-in for being an awesome, free panorama program.
Okay you win. The panoramas are pretty darn awesome.
Wait, we have to approve our own comments?
